Angie Fan
Angie brings a unique perspective to our coaching team, rooted in her empirically informed training in athlete well-being as a Mental Performance Consultant (Provisional) and Student Member of the Canadian Sport Psychology Association. As a Trained Provincial Coach, her coaching approach is grounded in the philosophy of “person first, athlete second”—prioritizing the skaters’ individual needs and aspirations through best practices that facilitate both physical and psychosocial development. She is committed to helping our skaters achieve their full potential by empowering them with the essential life skills and tools needed to thrive and succeed—within and beyond figure skating.
Since beginning coaching in 2016, she has worked with and helped to produce medalists and champions at the provincial levels. She strives to nurture an encouraging, healthy, and motivational training environment for our skaters to flourish. Furthermore, her extensive background in dance has helped her become a skilled choreographer to cultivate individual skaters’ artistic expression and creativity. Notably, she has also taught various forms of dance to skaters ranging from foundational to national levels.
During her time as a Lab Manager in Dr. Lara Aknin's Social Psychology Lab at Simon Fraser University (SFU), she helped conduct a series of pre-registered studies aimed at understanding how coaches can effectively support their athletes' welfare and development. Her research was marked by an exploration of psychological principles and prosociality-focused sport frameworks to promote athlete well-being, and she had the honour of presenting her findings at various national and international academic conferences. In 2022, Angie graduated with a BA (Hons.) in Psychology with Distinction from SFU. She was awarded the Psychology Department Crocker Family Award— in recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to research.
Currently, Angie is completing her master’s degree in mental performance and sport psychology at the University of Ottawa. As a Mental Performance Consultant working toward certification, she works with high-performance athletes from various sports at both the provincial and national levels.
